Humanities and Cultural Studies Degree Options

The Humanities and Cultural Studies Department (HCS) offers two degree and two minor options. Students may earn:

In order to graduate, students must fulfill all College and University requirements, as well as all Humanities or American Studies major requirements. College and University requirements include General Education courses, Gordon Rule courses and Exit courses. Please consult the most recent Undergraduate Catalog for a detailed description of these requirements.

Degree Requirements

Requirements for the Humanities B.A.

The Humanities major requires a total of 36 credit hours. A grade of C- or better is required in all Humanities major coursework. Coursework requirements include:

3 credit hours in 2000-level Humanities prerequisite courses:

  • HUM 2230 - European Humanities: Renaissance through Twentieth Century

3 credit hours in Interdisciplinary Historical Survey courses. Select from

  • HUM 2210 - Studies in Culture: The Classics Through Medieval Periods
  • HUM 2250 - 20th Century European Culture
  • AMS 2270 - 20th Century American Culture
  • HUM 2466 - Modern Latin American Culture

3 credit hours in Introductory Genre courses. Select from:

  • FIL 1002 - Introduction to Film
  • HUM 2522 - Introduction to Popular Music
  • a similar course approved by the department

3 credit hours in HUM 3804 - Introduction to Cultural Studies

  • Prereq. HUM 2230 Students must pass this course with a B- or better to register for the Pro-Seminar.

9 credit hours (3 courses) in Concentration Area. Select either "Ancient, Medieval, and Early Modern Concentration" or "Modern Concentration.

9 credit hours (3 courses) in Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies
Students must take 3 courses from among the following. All are variable topic courses and may be repeated up to 6 hrs. with a change of topic.

  • HUM 4391 - Places, Spaces, and Regions
  • HUM 4825 - Identity and Power
  • HUM 4890 - Genres and Media
  • HUM 4824 - Issues in Cultural Theory and Aesthetic Form
  • HUM 4261 - Cultural Periods and Styles

6 credit hours in Pro-Seminar/Senior Seminar two semester, senior-year sequence

  • HUM 3331 - Pro-Seminar
    Students must have at least 6 units of upper level major coursework in and a B- in HUM 3821 to enroll in the Pro-Seminar.
  • HUM 4931 - Seminar in Humanities
    Students must pass the Pro-Seminar with a C- or better to register for the Senior Seminar.

Requirements for the Minor in Humanities

The curriculum for the Humanities Minor is comparable to that of the program for the B.A. degree but it is far less comprehensive. Course requirements are as follows:

18 Credits of Humanities Courses

  • At least 10 hours must be taken at the 3000 level or above.
  • A grade of C- or better is required for all HUM minor coursework
  • Please make an appointment with the Humanities and Cultural Studies advisor to complete the necessary paperwork BEFORE you plan to graduate with a Humanities minor.

Degree Requirements

Requirements for the American Studies B.A.

The American Studies major requires a total of 36 credit hours. A grade of C- or better is required in all major coursework. Coursework requirements include:

3 credit hours in 2000-level American Studies courses:

  • AMS 2030 - Introduction to American Studies

3 credit hours in 2000-level Survey Course. Select from:

  • AMS 2201 - Colonial American Culture
  • AMS 2212 - Ninteenth Century American Culture
  • AMS 2270 - Twentieth Century American Culture

3-4 credit hours in Upper Level Period Course. Chose from:

  • AMS 3230 - America During the 1920s and 1930s
  • AMS 3001 - American Culture, 1880-1915
  • AMS 3260 - American Culture, 1830-1860

3-4 credit hours in Upper Level Regions Course.

  • AMS 3210 - Regions of America

3-4 credit hours in Upper Level Genre Course. Select from:

  • AMS 3601 - Material Culture and American Society
  • AMS 4152 - Film in American Culture
  • PGY 3001 - Photography in American Culture

4 credit hours in Senior Seminar

  • AMS 4935 - Senior Seminar

8-9 credit hours of additional AMS coursework

3-6 credit hours of supporting (non-AMS) coursework

  • Example: American Literature, American History
  • Contact Undergraduate Advisor to select courses

3 credit hours in Introduction to Cultural Studies.

American Studies B.A.


Requirements for the Minor in American Studies

A total of 18 credit hours is required for the minor in American Studies. At least 8 credit hours for the minor must be USF coursework.

18 Credits of American Studies Courses

  • 3 credit in AMS 2030 - Introduction to American Studies
  • 3 credit hours in Survery Course Select from AMS 2201, AMS 2212, or AMS 2270
  • 6 credit hours in AMS
  • 6 credit hours in Supporting Coursework to be selected with undergraduate advisor
  • Please make an appointment with the Humanities and Cultural Studies advisor to complete the necessary paperwork BEFORE you plan to graduate with a Humanities minor.
